Do you love working with children? Are you a good listener and want to help children have better relationships, friendships, and mental health? We are recruiting volunteers to become Roots of Empathy Instructors. Volunteer Instructors can be parents with time to give back or from a variety of backgrounds such as education, health care and more. You'll help us, "Change the world, child by child.

What We Do:

The Roots of Empathy program is delivered to elementary school children who are coached to recognize and connect with the vulnerability and humanity of a baby who visits their classroom throughout the school year with their parent(s), along with a trained Roots of Empathy Instructor using a specialized curriculum.

What is involved in becoming a Roots of Empathy Instructor?

Instructors attend a 3-day in person training on delivering the program near you. (A fourth day of training will be scheduled midway through the school year.)There is a brief application processTraining will occur late summer 2026 (exact dates tbd)Programs are delivered by the trained Instructor in their local community school starting in the fall and going to the end of the school year. There are 27 classroom visits. All new Instructors are matched with a Mentor who will support them in and out of the classroom.

Are you a new parent looking for a way to bond with your baby while giving back to the community?

Will you have a 2-4 month old by November 2026?

The Roots of Empathy program is delivered to elementary school children who are coached to recognize and connect with the vulnerability and humanity of a baby who visits their classroom throughout the school year with their parent(s), along with a trained Roots of Empathy Instructor using a specialized curriculum. We are looking for families with babies born between May-September 2026 to join us for the school year!

What's Involved?

9 classroom visits over the school year, approx. 1x/month for 30 minutes starting in September or October Each visit has a particular theme (crying, diapering, safety, preparing for baby, etc...) You'll stay with the same classroom, teacher, and Roots of Empathy instructor for the entire yearA big green blanket is spread on the floor during family visits and the children sit around it. They will all wash their hands before you enter the room. Students are not allowed to touch your baby and the blanket acts as a natural barrier as they observe and interact with them. You get to watch a class of children fall in love with your baby!
