Volunteer: Dog Fostering (All Expenses Paid & 24/7 support)

Misunderstood Mutts Rescue desperately needs foster individuals or families! We can't rescue a dog unless we have a foster home to place them in.

Experience the incredible satisfaction of saving an innocent life and bringing lasting love and stability into their world. Enjoy the companionship of fostering a dog for several weeks, while a forever home is found for them. We pay all expenses (food, clothing/gear, bedding, crate, vet visits, etc.), so the only thing you’re responsible for as a foster is to care for the dog until they’re adopted.

The amount of dogs being dumped, abandoned, & surrendered is overwhelming. We know this makes you as sad & angry as it makes us, so here’s how you can help us save dogs---become a Foster. Foster homes are the reason MMR is able to exist. We don’t work out of a facility, so we depend on fosters to shelter for our dogs until they're adopted. Sometimes we have to turn away dogs who need help strictly because we can’t find a foster home, so if you’ve been considering fostering there’s never been a better time to start.

Volunteer: Wix Website Maintenance Needed for Non-Profit Dog Rescue

We're seeking a savvy Wix website designer to be our "go-to" person for the occasional website update or "bug fix". This would be a few times a year or as a critical need arises. Have a look at our MMR website and get in touch.

Misunderstood Mutts Rescue (MMR) is a registered 501(c)3, volunteer-operated organization serving the greater Yakima Valley and Puget Sound region. We are dedicated to saving abandoned, free, and throwaway dogs in areas where abuse, neglect, and cruelty are prevalent.

Nearly a million healthy animals in the United States are euthanized each year because of overpopulation, and spaying and neutering is the only real long-term solution to the problem. As a foster-based rescue, we can only take in a limited amount of dogs at one time. Our spay and neuter program is an essential step toward our ultimate goal: a world that's free of homeless, neglected, abused, and abandoned animals.

Volunteer: Puppy Raiser

What Do Service Dog Puppy-Raisers Do?

No dog is born a service dog, they need to be trained and nurtured. With the help of you, our dedicated and loyal puppy-raisers and respite fosters, puppies start out the right way with socialization and lots of love.  Starting at about eight to twelve weeks of age, you commit to keep and care for him for the next six to eight months.  The task of puppy raisers is to provide a safe, loving environment for the dog, and to expose them to lots of opportunities for socialization. These experiences introduce our pups to the world in a positive, fun, and relaxed way, allowing them to explore the world in safety. We also offer ongoing training and support, including food and veterinary care, so your biggest job is to make sure they are loved and happy!  Without dedicated puppy raisers, service dog organizations would not be able to provide service animals to people in need.

Worried you won’t be able to give it up?  We’ll give you another one!   Worried you won't know how to be a puppy-raiser? Come to an Orientation to find out more.  We also have regular meetings and field trips with our trainers!

Interested?  Check our website https://www.brigadoondogs.org/become-a-puppy-raiser or email information@brigadoondogs.org!

The Bellingham Senior Activity Center is a wonderful place for members of our community to come together for community meals, activities, classes and meeting new friends.  Our center gives our members a sense of community, which is especially important after so many older people have been feeling isolated during covid. Our entire center is powered by amazing volunteers who want to give back to our community.  Our volunteers make our center a truly wonderful place to be and I hope you will join our wonderful/friendly team.

We are looking for friendly people who are interested in helping at our Greeter station welcoming our guests to our center and helping our guests get signed in. We are looking for subs who can help during a 2 or 3 hour shift.

If you are interested, please fill out a volunteer application and join our team.  (The volunteer application takes just a couple of minutes). Since we do work with a vulnerable population, we do ask that all volunteers provide a covid vaccine card and pass a simple background check.

Volunteer: Drive a DAV vehicle

Our nation’s heroes travel around the globe to protect our freedoms—it’s only right that we return their dedication. Volunteering to drive a Veteran ensures that even those living remotely from VA hospitals can make their appointments and not go without the treatment they need.

Join the team! Whatcom County volunteer drivers will operate a DAV van (no personal vehicles). Staged in Bellingham, departing early in the morning, the route of travel includes planned stops along the way in Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Stanwood, Arlington, and Marysville. After the Veterans are delivered to the Seattle VA Medical Center, the driver is free to go about their business in town or to remain at the facility until the Veteran calls the driver's government-supplied cell phone to advise they are ready to return home. Volunteer drivers are provided a meal ticket for use at the Veterans Canteen Service.

Volunteer drivers operate VA vehicles furnished by the DAV. Volunteers must be 21 or over, pass a physical, be insurable and have a valid driver's license. The approval process includes a federal background check which might take as long as 90 days, so apply now even for a future interest. Training will be provided.

Volunteer: Tree Wrangler (Work Party Stage Crew)

Join our awesome team of Tree Wranglers!

Tree Wranglers are like the stage crew at a play or concert, for our tree-planting work parties. They do all the planning, site exploration, transport, and manual labor that's needed to make sure each seedling will be planted in the right place, and all tools and materials are ready to go and arranged onsite. They also provide instruction and guidance to tree-planting volunteers during work parties. Their crucial prep work and expertise ensures smooth and productive tree-planting projects!

Work times are arranged in collaboration with our Planting Coordinator and other Tree Wranglers. As part of a small and flexible team, your individual commitment can vary according to your own preferences and schedule limitations. You'll typically be needed on weekdays leading up to a weekend work party, and sometimes right before and during a work party. Our planting season is November-late March.

We provide all necessary tools, gloves, and training, and if needed you may be able to arrange carpooling with other Wranglers (many sites are outside city limits/not accessible by public transportation or bike). Comfort with manual labor, heavy lifting, and all-weather outdoor work is a must; passion for trees and planting strategies preferred. This is a great opportunity to learn a lot and be part of a passionate and dedicated team, while doing satisfying work essential to the planting part of our mission! Let us know if you're interested in being a Tree Wrangler!

Volunteer: Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed

Want to join our Meals on Wheels volunteer team?  Are you kind and compassionate and want to make a difference for local seniors who are struggling to cook?  We have a team of volunteers who bring meals to homebound seniors in our community each week. Each week our amazing volunteers deliver over 4000 meals to home-bound seniors who can't cook for themselves.  Some of our seniors struggle to cook for a variety of reasons: some lost a loved one who did the cooking, some suffer from physical limitations, some face cognitive decline, others struggle to leave the house to get groceries for cooking.  Whatever the reason, we are there to make sure they have healthy meals.

We are looking for sub drivers (to fill in when drivers are on vacation or sick) and regular drivers to take over routes on a weekly basis. It does require having your own vehicle for transporting meals.

If you are interested, we would love to have you join us at our next orientation.  (Date TBD)

Note:  We also reimburse for mileage if requested. ($.50 per mile)

Most routes leave our center between 7:45am and 11:00 am Monday-Friday. (No Saturday routes)

To become a volunteer driver:

1. We ask volunteers to participate in an orientation (aprox 1 hour) to learn about being a driver and how to handle various situations.

 2. We ask volunteers to fill out a volunteer application so we can run a background check (Required by the DSHS)

              https://whatcomcoa.org/volunteer-application/

3)  We  verify Driver's License and Auto Insurance

4) Before delivering a route, we ask drivers to go on a ride-along with one of our experienced drivers so it is a smooth transition for our participants and our drivers.

We would be happy to answer any questions you have and we would love for you to join this amazing team of volunteers who are making a huge difference in our community.

This is a GREAT opportunity for a teen to ride-along with a parent to deliver meals while the parent drives.

Volunteer: Students Age 11+: Help wrap silverware for Senior Center Lunches

Come Join Our Amazing Volunteer Team!

We are looking for volunteers each day who can help us wrap silverware for our daily senior lunches.  High School Students are welcome (Age 14+).  A parent permission slip is required.  (Students age 11-13 okay with an adult if the child is able to stay focused and able to follow instructions.)

This volunteer role includes wrapping silverware with a napkin and a paper tab. Requires fine motor skills and attention to detail.  It is a great way to help the seniors in our community. Our entire Meals on Wheels program is powered by volunteers like you!  So every volunteer is part of an amazing program that gives back to our community.

The Bellingham Senior Activity Center is a wonderful place for members of our community to come together for community meals, activities, classes and meeting new friends.  Our center gives our members a sense of community, which is especially important after so many older people have been feeling isolated during covid.

If you are an adult and interested, please fill out a volunteer application and join our team.  (The volunteer application takes just a couple of minutes). Since we do work with a vulnerable population, we do ask that all volunteers provide a covid vaccine card and pass a simple background check.  If you are under the age of 18, no volunteer application is required. (Just a parent permission slip)

Thank you so much for considering volunteering at our wonderful center. We look forward to having you on our team.

Volunteer: DUI Victim Impact Panel Speakers

The Victim Impact Panel (VIP) was created to reduce DUI injuries and fatalities in Whatcom County. Speakers share personal stories about how a DUI impacted them, either personally or through the loss or injury of a loved one. The VIP has a history of providing a powerful voice about the consequences of impaired driving. It exposes honest realities of impaired driving and creates appreciation for the seriousness of driving while impaired.

Speakers give presentations on Monday evenings every other month. Panels consist of 2 or 3 speakers who, in a non-accusatory manner, describe the emotional, social, financial, and/or other effects a DUI has had on their lives. We strive to include one speaker each panel that is a victim survivor of an impaired driving collision.

For more information about the panel, please visit our VIP webpage.

If you have been impacted by a DUI and are interested in speaking on the panel, please contact the panel coordinator at 360-778-6002 or Health_VIP@co.whatcom.wa.us

Volunteer: Spread Love, Joy, and Frosting as a volunteer baker in Bellingham, WA!

Help us spread love, joy and frosting as a volunteer baker in Bellingham, WA!

For Goodness Cakes works with foster agencies and care homes to match volunteers to bake and deliver birthday cakes to disadvantaged youth and young adults in many locations across the US.

We are looking for volunteer bakers to join our Sprinkle Squad of intrepid bakers to help put smiles on a child’s face. The opportunity is flexible around your schedule, whether you can commit to one cake a year or fifty. You don’t have to be a master cake decorator to help out, even a simple cake can make the day sweet!

These children and young adults' lives when we connect with them are centered around fixing their immediate traumas - be it neglect, poverty, or abandonment. For Goodness Cakes presents a unique opportunity to help give them the chance to disconnect from that trauma, and give hope in the world around them. It produces such an incredible impact from a small effort that almost anyone can join and give back around their own busy schedules.

You can check out our website at the link below to take our online orientation and begin baking cakes! This training is mandatory for all volunteers, and there are zero exceptions. You'll learn about how we work, what to expect from your volunteer experience, and all about food safety - because that's our number one priority! When you become a volunteer you'll be baking out of your own home, choosing cakes to bake and deliver around your own schedule, so it's imperative you understand the risks and liabilities.

Keep in mind that you must be at least 18 years old, are able to make deliveries in the County you provide, and you must pass with a 90% or more within two attempts. Baking with us is not a group activity and we ask that you sign up with our organization as an individual.

By responding to this listing we will reach out to you. Hope to see you on the Sprinkle Squad soon!

Volunteer: African Education Research

Who We Are

We are a collection of individuals from northwest Washington and Vancouver, Canada. We are all volunteers, so we do not take any salaries, but we do have paid staff in Kenya. We have several major partners in Kenya that include some of the major game conservancies, and a nationwide group that provides digital education and support across the region.

What We Do

AfreTech is a non-profit in the US/Canada, and a registered NGO in Kenya under the name of 'ARES'. Our focus in delivering high quality digital education solutions in parts of rural East Africa that lack quality schools, have limited/no power, and limited/no internet. The ARES education system is an offline system that provides a massive amount of high-quality content along with notebooks, projectors, networking, etc. It also includes a significant amount of training and local support. We have over 75 systems installed now across East Africa now and are growing rapidly. We have recently been certified by the Kenyan Government for use in public school systems. We are planning a major expansion in 2023 and are focused on fund-raising to support that effort. You can learn more at: https://afretech.org, and https:// AresEducation.org.

Volunteer Opportunity

We are planning a major expansion of our projects in east Africa in 2023 and need to secure significant funding in order to accomplish that. We need a volunteer that can assist (or lead) us in the research and planning for this effort. The position will mostly be focused on researching quality funding opportunities and preparing documents to submit for application. The existing leadership team will handle presentations, etc. as needed. (However, if the volunteer is interested in participating in that they are welcome.) The work hours are completely flexible. The key to success is a passion for helping students in remote rural villages gain access to a quality education opportunity, and a comfort level with research, writing, and strong communication skills. Previous experience with fund raising is very helpful, but not a pre-requisite.
