Volunteer: Disasters harm families. Can you help?Every day, the American Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people trying to cope with more intense storms, heavier rainfall, higher temperatures, stronger hurricanes and more devastating wildfires. As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater. Volunteers help comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to fires, storms and other emergencies, so they don’t have to face tough times alone. Join us and turn your compassion into action by becoming a volunteer today. We are actively recruiting for these critical volunteer roles: Shelter Support Team: During large disasters, you can support the day-to-day activities within a shelter which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice. Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. We supply all the training you need. Volunteer: Meals on Wheels Drivers NeededCome join our Amazing Meals on Wheels Volunteer Team! Are you a kind and compassionate person who wants to make a difference and have a positive impact for senior members in our community? If the answer is yes, then this is the opportunity for you! We have a team of amazing volunteers who bring meals to homebound seniors in our community Monday thru Friday, delivering over 4000 meals each week. Our Meals on Wheels clients struggle to cook for themselves for a variety of reasons: some lost a loved one who did the cooking, some suffer from physical limitations, some face cognitive decline, others struggle to leave the house to get groceries for cooking. Whatever the reason, we are there to make sure they have healthy meals. We are looking for Sub Drivers to fill in when Regular Drivers are on vacation, have an appointment, or are out sick, with the opportunity for a recurring once-a -week route delivery when one arises, if desired. It does require having your own vehicle for transporting meals, with mileage reimbursement available. If you are interested in becoming a driver, we would love to have you join us at our next Meals on Wheels Orientation, which is mandatory before being able to deliver meals. (Date TBD) Most routes leave our center between 7:45am and 11:00 am Monday-Friday. (No weekend routes) To become a volunteer driver: 1. We ask volunteers to participate in an orientation (approx. 1.5 hours) to learn about being a driver and how to handle various situations. 2. We ask volunteers to fill out a Volunteer Application so that we can run a background check (required by DSHS). Feel free to come by the Bellingham Senior Activity Center and pick up an application, or apply online at: www.whatcomcoa.org (Click on "VOLUNTEER" in the upper right corner of the homepage, and then scroll about halfway down the page to access the beginning of the application) 3) We will verify Driver's License and Auto Insurance and make a copy of both at the Meals on Wheels Orientation. 4) Before delivering a route, we ask drivers to go on a ride-along with one of our experienced drivers so it is a smooth transition for our participants and our drivers. We would be happy to answer any questions you have and would love for you to join this amazing team of volunteers who are making a huge difference in our community. This is a GREAT opportunity for a teen to ride-along with a parent to deliver meals while the parent drives. Questions? Volunteer: Tool ManagerAs a non-profit, it's extra important we take good care of the tools of our trade - shovels, mattocks, loppers, hand trimmers, etc. - so they can last longer, avoiding unnecessary replacement costs. The ideal Tool Manager has: a good place and materials for tool-cleaning (a hose at minimum, brushes can be provided), a secure and weather-proof garage, shed, or barn to store them in, a vehicle that can easily transport all of them (pickup truck or van would be best), and a few hours a month and some elbow grease to spare. Volunteer: Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest - Seeking VolunteersWe are looking for volunteers!
We host an annual event - a poetry contest open to residents of all ages. For close to 20 years, local poets have been sending us their outstanding creations. The committee that does all the leg work to make it happen is seeking new members. You need not be a poet, just interested in helping the arts thrive in our community. Let us know if you might like to lend a hand. Committee members collect the poems, select the judges, arrange the celebration of winners, and join forces to provide the rewards that are presented to winners. Meetings are held to discuss the tasks at hand and assign the duties involved. We're a fun bunch, & dedicated to keeping this tradition alive in Whatcom County. Currently, we are in need of a bookkeeper to help us keep track of funds coming in through donations, grants, or other means, as well as keep track of all of our spending on items and services we use that we accumulate throughout the year. Please contact us if you can help with this aspect of making the poetry contest successful.

Donations, fund-raising, and adoptions makes rescuing dogs possible for our non-profit. Position Summary:
The Opportunity Council’s Early Learning and Family Services (ELAFS) department is recruiting mentors in Whatcom and Island counties for Economic Security for All (EcSA) – a yearlong program designed to help families and individuals gain financial literacy and improve their employment opportunities. EcSA provides financial education, coaching and monetary incentives for the families and individuals in the program. Participants with children will also receive age-appropriate curriculum to help the entire family gain financial knowledge and skills. Both parents and children will actively participate. As a mentor, you will help to coach families through an individualized plan that includes group learning and one-on-one opportunities. Our participants will also have access to the service of the Northwest Workforce Council to help them explore job training opportunities and the participants can work with NWC to research employment options.
You can make a difference in the lives of our enrollees. Mentoring will consist of providing one-on-one financial coaching using our financial toolkit and collaborating with the enrollee(s) to develop goals in a Family Resiliency Plan.
Responsibilities:
Mentors will be trained to work closely with a participant to develop goals to improve financial health while providing needed social and emotional support. We prefer mentors who can commit to assisting an EcSA participant for the entire year of the program. Mentors will meet one-on-one, through Zoom, phone calls or text, with a selected family an average of 10 hours of mentorship, creating financial goals, and virtual Knowledge Night attendance.
Training: Training is provided, and no previous experience is required to volunteer as a mentor. Prior to being matched with a family, all mentors will receive quality training in poverty culture, goal setting, financial coaching, and the financial tool-kit with continued support and opportunity for personal and professional development from staff and coordinators. Our mentors will attend virtual financial training in January 2025 for 6 weeks, then begin working with program participants through January 2026.
Requirements:
Applicants must be dedicated, supportive, patient, and flexible individuals who are willing to be an advocate for a family regardless of difference in lifestyle, beliefs, culture, or background. As a mentor, it is important to have good listening skills, initiative, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Volunteer: Dog Fostering (All Expenses Paid & 24/7 support)Misunderstood Mutts Rescue desperately needs foster individuals or families! We can't rescue a dog unless we have a foster home to place them in. Experience the incredible satisfaction of saving an innocent life and bringing lasting love and stability into their world. Enjoy the companionship of fostering a dog for several weeks, while a forever home is found for them. We pay all expenses (food, clothing/gear, bedding, crate, vet visits, etc.), so the only thing you’re responsible for as a foster is to care for the dog until they’re adopted. The amount of dogs being dumped, abandoned, & surrendered is overwhelming. We know this makes you as sad & angry as it makes us, so here’s how you can help us save dogs---become a Foster. Foster homes are the reason MMR is able to exist. We don’t work out of a facility, so we depend on fosters to shelter for our dogs until they're adopted. Sometimes we have to turn away dogs who need help strictly because we can’t find a foster home, so if you’ve been considering fostering there’s never been a better time to start. Volunteer: Wix Website Maintenance Needed for Non-Profit Dog RescueWe're seeking a savvy Wix website designer to be our "go-to" person for the occasional website update or "bug fix". This would be a few times a year or as a critical need arises. Have a look at our MMR website and get in touch. Misunderstood Mutts Rescue (MMR) is a registered 501(c)3, volunteer-operated organization serving the greater Yakima Valley and Puget Sound region. We are dedicated to saving abandoned, free, and throwaway dogs in areas where abuse, neglect, and cruelty are prevalent. Nearly a million healthy animals in the United States are euthanized each year because of overpopulation, and spaying and neutering is the only real long-term solution to the problem. As a foster-based rescue, we can only take in a limited amount of dogs at one time. Our spay and neuter program is an essential step toward our ultimate goal: a world that's free of homeless, neglected, abused, and abandoned animals.
