Bellingham At Home (BAH), a non-profit membership organization, is a virtual Village in Bellingham WA empowering older adults to stay active and engaged while living in their own homes and neighborhoods.  It is a program of the Whatcom Council on Aging.

The Village is powered by volunteers who provide “good neighbor” assistance to older folks in our community. Volunteers provide transportation to medical appointments and other services in Bellingham, take members shopping, provide companionship, complete light home repairs and garden maintenance, and other tasks as needed.  (BAH does NOT provide medical assistance, personal care, nor ongoing cleaning and maintenance tasks.)

If you are searching for opportunities to use your skills to support the Bellingham community and enjoy talking with interesting people who have many life experiences to share, you’d make a great BAH volunteer. Most assistance requests are for 2-hour time slots and you can let us know when you are available.  There is no weekly commitment; flexibility to meet your own schedule. Summary:  The RC/CJ Front Desk and Special Project Volunteer spends part of their time overseeing the front desk of the Resource Center and the other part working on special projects that support the operation of Ferndale Community Services.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Front desk: 

Greet guests and meet needs, talking with guests and maintaining confidentiality as much as possible. Answer questions about programs and services and pass messages when necessary. 

Assist guests with clothing bank items as needed. 

Distribute direct services upon request, including hygiene items, food, gas cards, bus passes, shower passes, laundry vouchers, and gift cards following all procedures for proper documentation and tracking. 

Refer guests with more complicated needs to Community Resource Navigator. 

Answer phones and return voicemails. 

Assist guests with computer, printer, and fax access as needed. 

Help guests find community resources via online search, with or for them.  Help with phone access as needed. 

Accept donations and follow all procedures for tracking and storing. 

Keep Resource Center clean, tidy and organized. 

Special Projects: 

Work on projects as assigned by the Executive Director or Community Resource Navigator to include: 

Research, online, phone, or in-person 

Creating documents or flyers 

Sorting, organizing, tidying 

Outreach or follow up to various stakeholders as assigned

Position:  Clothing Bank Donation Sorter

Reports to:  Clothing Bank Coordinator

Summary:  The Clothing Bank helper works with the Clothing Bank Coordinator to sort, fold, and stock clothing for the clothing bank program inside the Ferndale Community Resource Center

Provide general administrative support for Job Training and Education (JTE) Centers by greeting students and visitors, answering phones, and more.

Kulshan Carbon Trust (KCT) is seeking a creative and detail-oriented volunteer to help enhance and maintain our website. Our site is the “front window” for the organization—how we share our mission, invite collaboration, and connect with our community. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for environmental action, user-focused design, and clear communication. You’ll work closely with our team to update content, improve navigation, modernize visual elements, and ensure the site effectively tells the story of our work and impact.

Responsibilities:

Update and refine existing pages to better reflect KCT’s mission, programs, and current projects.

Create new pages for priority areas, such as board/advisor recruitment and partner collaboration opportunities.

Volunteer Tutor/Mentor Opportunity 

Step Up Tutoring is seeking volunteers to provide virtual 1-on-1 tutoring to 2nd-6th grade students from underserved communities to help build fundamental math and literacy skills and to provide support and encouragement. All tutoring will take place virtually! All you need is a computer and internet access. No prior tutoring experience is needed.

Responsibilities:

Tutor 1-on-1 twice a week via an online video platform; each session is 45 minutes

All training is done through online, self-paced modules. No prior tutoring experience is required.

Focus on building fundamental math and literacy skills using evidence-based online programs

DVSAS Volunteer Advocates ensure that no matter when it is, or where they are, victims of intimate partner violence or sexual assault don’t have to be alone. After you've completed your training, you'll be working directly with DVSAS clients. You'll answer calls on our helpline, meet with clients in our office, accompany clients to the hospital for forensic exams, and provide support for clients at hearings.

We ask volunteers to commit to one 4 hour shift per week for a year after your training. Our next training class starts on September 15th!

Summary:  The Supply Bundler Volunteer helps package goods for distribution through our Mobile Resource Center. They are given a checklist of supplies, which are provided by B2S, to create bundles that are given to unhoused individuals and families.Volunteers are able to either work on site at our administrative building or pick up the supplies and bundle them at home.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Package goods for distribution following a provided checklist, ensuring that all required supplies are included in each bundle. 

Ensure that goods are packaged in such a way that they will not be damaged when transported. 

Coordinate with B2S Program Manager to schedule bundling shifts, or for volunteers who wish to work from home, scheduling pick up times for bundling supplies.  

Communicate to the B2S Program Managerany issues with supply availability or quality.

Summary:  The Donation Transport Volunteer picks up donations from drop locations around Whatcom County. Volunteers commit to maintain between 1-5 donation drop locations: picking up and transporting donations to our B2S warehouse, scheduling pickups and drop offs, keeping the donation drop box and nearby area clean, and helping maintain a good relationship with donation drop host sites.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Regularly check assigned drop box locations for any donations. 

Keep drop boxes and the nearby area clean, picking up any garbage in the immediate area. 

Check in with host businesses to see if any problems have been reported. 

Coordinate with B2S Program Manager toschedule donation drop off times at the B2S warehouse.  

Communicate to the B2S Program Managerthe status of each drop box when checked, including info on any damaged or missing boxes and any problems reported by host businesses.

OUTREACH & EVENTS COMMITTEE

Help build awareness and support for our mission and programs! As part of the Outreach and Events Committee (aka Outreach Otters), you will join us at our info tables at community events and fundraisers like nature trivia at local pubs. Other activities can be done on your own time, like posting flyers, prepping prize bags, and writing thank you cards. Commitment: meets monthly with a suggested one-year term. We ask that you volunteer for a minimum of four community events (average time is 2-4 hours each) per year. We are looking for dedicated individuals that are interested in driving food bank vehicles to grocery stores to pick up donated food. This is a physically active position and requires a valid driver's license and experience in driving a box van or similar large vehicle. Drivers and driver assistants are needed 7 days per week for multiple vehicles. Shifts are available on a recurring regular basis and are usually 8am - noon.

Group program support volunteers will assist program managers and recreation leaders in supporting teens and adults with developmental disabilities in community-based recreation programs. We host an annual event - a poetry contest open to residents of all ages.  For close to 20 years, local poets have been sending us their outstanding creations.  The committee that does all the leg work to make it happen is seeking new members.  You need not be a poet, just interested in helping the arts thrive in our community.  Let us know if you might like to lend a hand.

Committee members collect the poems, select the judges, arrange the celebration of winners, and join forces to provide the rewards that are presented to winners.  Meetings are held to discuss the tasks at hand and assign the duties involved.  We're a fun bunch, & dedicated to keeping this tradition alive in Whatcom County.

Currently, we are in need of a bookkeeper to help us keep track of funds coming in through donations, grants, or other means, as well as keep track of all of our spending on items and services we use that we accumulate throughout the year. Road2Home works with the people who are living unsheltered.  Staff and volunteers help them navigate through a complex system to ultimately obtain permanent housing.  Sometimes progress is hampered by outstanding legal issues associated with historical evictions, past due rents, charges that are outstanding, and other situations.  In situations such as these, someone with knowledge of the law and instruction on how to move forward is necessary.

We are looking for someone with the legal experience and capacity to assist, on a pro bono basis.  Your guidance is needed in the resolution of these issues so we can continue progressing on the road to a permanent home for people in our programs.

The goal of the program is to help individuals (Youth 16-24 y.o.) explore career opportunities, learn about labor market information to make informed decisions for future employment opportunities, and ultimately obtain employment. The Whatcom Literacy Council is a member of ProLiteracy America and a United Way partner agency.  We provide free one-to-one tutoring and small classes. Our tutors can work with learners throughout Whatcom County at a public meeting place and at times that fit our learners' busy schedules.

Join the EduArts Enrichment team! Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY) is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with our after school enrichment program, EduArts. Classes are offered MTWF from 2:30 - 3:30 or 4pm and Thursdays from 12:45-2:30pm. Weekly hours for each assistant could vary from 1 to 5 hours per week depending on volunteer availability and interest. The grade ranges of students in each class are K-2nd and 3rd-5th.

BAAY's volunteer internships are a valuable means of getting hands-on classroom experience and mentorship from one of our professional arts instructors. Applicants should have their own mode of transportation (or be willing to carpool or bus), and could be asked to teach in various schools throughout the Bellingham School District. Seeking volunteers to staff a non-profit Lions Club Eye clinic providing free care to low income uninsured individuals one Thursday afternoon a month.

The Haskell Lions Eye Clinic is seeking volunteer opticians to staff the non-profit clinic the 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoons of each month.  There are rotating opticians so it is not necessary to work every clinic day.

World Relief matches newly-arrived refugees with American Host Homes that can assist the family in learning English, adjusting to American culture, and preparing them for self-sufficiency.

Make a difference in the refugee and immigrant community by volunteering to help drive routes for English classes and other appointments as needed using one of our World Relief fleet vehicles. You will be helping provide a much needed resource for clients as they integrate here.

Learn about the cultural adjustment process firsthand and expand your worldview by getting to know a refugee or immigrant family through a supportive friendship focused on cultural awareness alongside practical help navigating life in America.

Our Grocery Rescue Program helps us rescue almost 700,000 lbs. of food from going into landfills each year. We pick up food form local grocery stores and either redistribute it to the community, donate it to local livestock farmers, or compost it. We are currently in need of a Friday volunteer in this department.

This position is a Grocery Rescue Assistance on Fridays from 8-11 AM. This position would aid our Grocery Rescue Drivers in picking up donated food and getting it back to the food bank for distribution. It requires the ability to lift 25-50 lbs. from the ground and includes frequent standing and movement.  It also requires knowing or being willing to learn how to safely operate a lift gate and potentially a pallet jack. We are looking for one person to cover. This is a weekly need and consistency for this position is key.

Street Medicine is looking for a few more doctors and nurses to sustain and increase our services.  We are team of volunteer doctors and nurses who provide empathy based medical care for our unhoused neighbors.  We send teams or 4 to 5 to the streets and camps to perform basic wound care, first aid, and consultation.  We are members of the Medical Reserve Corps.

The goal of the Arts Commission is to enhance opportunities for an enriched and diverse cultural experience for the entire community.

There are two (2) vacancies on the Commission. Meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 4:00 pm and the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm.

The major responsibility of the Historic Preservation Commission is to identify and actively encourage the conservation of the City of Bellingham's historic resources by initiating and maintaining a register of historic places and reviewing proposed changes to register properties; to raise community awareness of the City's history and historic resources; and to serve as the City's primary resource in matters of history, historic planning, and preservation. They also review and make recommendations on development proposals located in specified historic design review districts. The duties of the Commission are more specifically listed in the Historic Preservation Ordinance, Bellingham Municipal Code Chapter 17.90 and Design Review, Bellingham Municipal Code Chapter 20.25.

We need someone that is familiar with all aspects of the highest use social media tools (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.) and can assist us with a fund-raising campaign directed at social media. This should be someone that can create and manage regular posting on our behalf, and knows how (or is willing to learn) how to create and manage ad campaigns on social media. The funds we are trying to raise will be used to both enhance and support the schools in Kenya that are already using ARES, and also to expand our footprint to additional areas of the country. We have a large backlog of requests from schools that would like an ARES installation, but we're limited in terms of our ability to respond without additional funders.
