Volunteer: Join the Disaster Response Team and Help Your Neighbors When Needed Most

Help Screen Volunteers During Times of Disaster

When a major disaster strikes Whatcom County, that is when our neighbors need us the most.

The Volunteer Mobilization Center (VMC) is set up when Whatcom County suffers a major disaster (i.e., major flood, earthquake, mudslide). When a disaster strikes, hundreds of concerned individuals turn out to help. We are looking for individuals who can help screen and process these wonderful folks, as we send them to volunteer wherever they are needed.

The VMC is looking for individuals who can work in a busy environment sending volunteers out in the field to help us recover.  The VMC may be set up in church, school, or any other building as determined by the County Department of Emergency Services.

If you want to be a part of the team that helps Whatcom County recover from a disaster, please respond, and we'll be in touch with you. Thank you.

Volunteer: Museum Assistants/Docents

Do you enjoy working with the public?  Are you interested in history and the role trains had in shaping our community? Are you a self starter? The Bellingham Railway Museum needs some enthusiastic helpers who can assist in a variey of roles in the Museum.

We serve the public every day and need some friendly people who can assist with taking admission, showing guests around, and helping operate model trains.  If you have an interest in history or any technical skills, those would be a huge plus because those subjects are integral to what we do.

Our need is to have dependable people who can commit to at least one day a week for the 5 hour block (we are open 12-5 Tuesday-Saturday). We are very flexible. Your role may be varied depending on the needs of the day and could range from greeting customers, light housekeeping, and answering questions about the items we have on display.  Even if you do not currently know much about history or the area, your skills may be a match if you are good with people.

All volunteers will be required to take the "Stewards of Children" training within the first month of service at the Museum. (The BRM will pay for the training.)

Volunteer: Sound & Microphone Ninja

Your task is simple - be stealthy, be silent, dress in black and adjust microphone height for a variety of 'Fools' (ranging 5 - 6 feet). You also will go smoothly back and forth between a small stage and the bartender to signal music cues. You are fully comfortable doing this. The perks? You get to see author Tom Robbins recount personal details of his early crazed foolishness for love, hear stories from local adults about their mis/adventures in romance and be part of something amazing for the night.

Love's Fool is our second annual nonprofit fundraiser where we celebrate the divinely imperfect journey of the heart. Open to ages 12 & up. Games, silent auction & more. Audience pick will determine 'Fool of the Night' to be crowned with jester's hat, flowers and prizes!

Contact the Director to talk about your experience and skills. We look forward to having you!
