Do you want to empower adults in your community with the gift of language? Volunteer with the Whatcom Literacy Council and help us support adult English Language Learners in improving their basic English skills.

Some teaching experience necessary for this position. We provide training and resources.

What:

Facilitate a class of 30-40 adults learning English. Optional classroom assistance is provided.

Lynden, WA

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 AM

The Whatcom Literacy Council is a member of ProLiteracy America and a United Way partner agency.  We provide free one-to-one tutoring and small classes. Our tutors can work with learners throughout Whatcom County at a public meeting place and at times that fit our learners' busy schedules. 

We are seeking Classroom Assistant volunteers to assist in English classes at BTC and WCC for the 2025-2026 academic year.  Classes are in the morning and evening.  The minimum commitment is one class (2 hrs per week) for one academic quarter. 

Adult education lifts people out of poverty. Having a GED or a high school diploma means higher salaries, good job opportunities, and better working conditions.

Interested in volunteering your time to support adult literacy and adult basic education in Whatcom County but don't have the time to commit to 1-to-1 tutoring? Would you like to develop your tutoring skills? We are currently looking for volunteers to serve as classroom tutors in the Adult Basic Education, GED, and ESL courses taught at both Bellingham Technical College and Whatcom Community College. This is a great opportunity for you to give back to the community that only requires about 2 hours of your time each week for an academic quarter. You will be assisting an instructor, so you don't need to worry about lesson planning - just helping students master the material so they can fulfill their educational goals and improve their lives.

Sometimes we get requests from learners in the community who have identified themselves as having Autism or intellectual disabilities. In order to best serve their unique needs and provide the right kind of learning environment for success, these individuals would benefit from the tutoring support of volunteers who have experience in special education and/or adults with intellectual disabilities.  If you have experience in these areas or know someone who is who may be interested in volunteering for our organization as a tutor, please get in touch with:
