What We Do

Our Mission: Empowering adults to achieve their goals and improve their lives through literacy.

At Whatcom Literacy Council, we are dedicated to increasing literacy skills for adults in Whatcom County.

Since 1978, the Whatcom Literacy Council has been helping adults in Whatcom County improve their literacy skills or learn to use English as a second language. Through customized, individual tutoring and small group classes our students learn critical skills needed to become self –sufficient. Each year our students achieve goals that improve their parenting skills, employment skills, citizenship and further their education.

The Whatcom Literacy Council is a nonprofit organization, funded through its own efforts and with the support of local businesses, organizations and individuals. With the help of over 60 volunteer tutors over 500 "learners" are served each year.  Volunteers receive 8 hours of training at the onset of their service, and staff support throughout their tenure.  On average a volunteer tutor works with a learner about 3 hours/week.

The Whatcom Literacy Council partners closely with other area basic education providers, including Whatcom Community College, Bellingham Technical College, Goodwill, and the Whatcom County Library System.
