Description

Kulshan Community Media (KMRE 88.3 FM) is seeking a volunteer Treasurer/Accountant to potentially join our Board of Directors and help ensure the financial health of our nonprofit community radio station.

KMRE is an all-volunteer, nonprofit community radio station serving Whatcom County. We provide local news, public affairs, music, and programming that amplifies voices and stories from across our community. We're looking for someone who believes in the value of independent local media and enjoys helping mission-driven organizations succeed.

This is a flexible volunteer opportunity

  • Work remotely from anywhere, with occasional virtual board meetings.

  • Most bookkeeping and accounting tasks can be completed on your own schedule.

  • Estimated commitment:: 1-4 hours per month, with additional time during year-end and tax filing season.

Responsibilities

As Treasurer, you'll oversee the station's financial records and help maintain accurate accounting using Wave Accounting. Responsibilities include:

  • Recording monthly donations from Patreon, Zeffy, PayPal, checks, and cash (usually 5 transactions)

  • Reconciling bank accounts and preparing monthly financial statements ( 1 a month)

  • Recording deposits, payments, and journal entries (usually under 10)

  • Managing accounts payable and vendor payments (usually 3 a month)

  • Assisting with annual tax filings, including:

    • IRS Form 990-N

    • 1099 reporting

    • City of Bellingham Business & Occupation tax filing

  • Maintaining donor records and annual donation acknowledgements

  • Providing financial reports to the Board of Directors

  • Helping ensure sound financial practices for the organization

Comprehensive written procedures are already in place for every recurring task, making the position easy to learn and transition into.

Ideal Qualifications

We're looking for someone with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Bookkeeping or accounting

  • Nonprofit finance

  • Banking or financial management

  • Treasurer experience for a nonprofit or civic organization

  • CPA, accountant, retired finance professional, or experienced bookkeeper (not required)

Experience with Wave Accounting, Excel or Google Sheets, and basic financial reporting is helpful but not required.
